The PFC Zachary R. Gullett Memorial Scholarship is being given in
the memory of PFC Zachary R. Gullett.

PFC Zachary Gullett (Zach), 20, was born in Dayton, Ohio on July
3, 1986, the son of Alan Michael and Connie (Helterbrand) Gullett.

Zachary was a 2004 graduate of Hillsboro High School, where he
participated in marching band, drama, symphonic choir, and
football. Zachary was also a member of the Military Police
Regimental Association.  In 2005 Zachary attended and graduated
from Ohio University (Chillicothe), and graduated with a certificate
of completion in Law Enforcement.

Zachary enlisted in the army on 23 Feb 2006 and reported to FT
Leonard Wood, MO for One Station Unit Training (OSUT) as a Military
Policeman.  Zachary graduated from OSUT on 8 Aug 2006.  
Zachary reported to the 984th MP Co, FT Carson, CO on 18 August 2006.

Zachary was deployed to Iraq on 16 Sept 2006 and was stationed in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq.  He was very proud to be a military
police officer and was planning to pursue a career with the Ohio State Patrol at the conclusion of his 5 years of enlistment with
the Army.

Zachary had returned to his squad in Iraq at midnight on May 1st after having spent 15 days at home in Hillsboro, enjoying time
with his family and friends.

Zachary died on Tuesday, May 1, 2007, when he collapsed while doing his PT exercises with his squad.

A scholarship will be given to a senior each year upon graduation from Hillsboro High School to be used in pursuit of a higher
level education in law enforcement at accredited schools offering such courses.

Preference is given to students with a GPA average of "C" or above, considering first those who have been members of the
Hillsboro High School Band during any of their four years of high school, and if none, then to any other worthy graduate.

Preference is given to a student who exhibits by their behavior and scholastic achievement that he/she strives to further their
knowledge and educational experience in this chosen profession.

Certain characteristics of the student will be considered by the selection committee as follows: responsibility to themselves, their
family, school and community; honesty; dependability; sportsmanship in their dealings with others on a daily basis; punctuality;
perseverance and loyalty.

Scholarships are awarded on a year to year basis.  One student will receive a five-hundred dollar scholarship yearly.

The committee is comprised of the two trustees, presently Susan Davis, attorney at law, and Connie Gullett, Mother of Pfc.
Zachary R. Gullett, the Hillsboro High School principal, the Hillsboro High School band director, the Highland County Sheriff and
a maximum of three other senior level teachers or other persons, selected by trustees.

The first annual scholarship was given to Sarah Williams in 2007.
